Welcome
Traditional Events at In-SHUCK-ch Days 2010

Traditional Sampling
A sample of traditional foods such as salmon will be provided for everyone to enjoy.

Drumming
Drumming is an integral part of In-SHUCK-ch culture which has been passed on through countless generations. A common phrase among In-SHUCK-ch people is “The Drum is the heartbeat of our people”. The teachings of the drum are an important means of learning the songs of the people and maintaining In-SHUCK-ch traditions.

Dancing
Siq’úta is a regional dance accompanied by drumming and singing that has been practiced for generations. An important aspect of Siq’úta is the recognition ceremony, during which dancers are formally recognized by the community and earn the right to wear the traditional stem’tétem’ dance clothing.

Drum Making
Drum making is more than throwing a skin on a frame and tightening it. You need to show respect for all the things that gave up their lives for it. The process must involve giving something of value to the earth/creator equal to what you are taking.

Xúsum (soap berry) Ice Cream Making
Xúsum, commonly known as the soap berry, can be used to make juice or ice cream. Xúsum ice cream is made by adding sugar and whipping the berries with a whisk. Traditionally natural sugars from tree sap may have been used instead of the refined sugar used today.

Bone Game
The Bone Game is a traditional ritual game which is a contest of spirit, wits and chance. The game is played with two teams of equal size with a minimum of five people on each side. Traditionally the Bone Game was a means of conflict resolution and teamwork building.

Cedar Weaving
Cedar Weaving is a traditional skill used to create baskets, clothing and other useful items. Both the bark and the roots of the tree can be used, each to make different things. The roots need to be dug out of the ground, stripped and split before they can be used. Cedar bark is peeled directly from the tree during particular times of the year.

Ucwalmícwts (language)
Ucwalmicwts is the traditional language of the In-SHUCK-ch people, and is now spoken fluently by only a small number of people. Ucwalmicwts language bingo is a fun way of learning the traditional language of the In-SHUCK-ch people. Learning the lyrics of traditional songs is another practical way of learning the language.
