The In-SHUCK-ch Nation is a political union made up of three First Nations'
communities involved in negotiating a treaty with British Columbia and
Canada (The term 'band' has been replaced with 'First Nations' community'.
'Band', loosely defined, is the smallest political unit of any First
Nation. It was adopted by Canada's Department of Indian Affairs and Northern
Development at its inception, and is now considered rather derogatory).
These three communities share cultural, ethnic and linguistic origins
with other communities that make up the 'Lillooet' ethnographic group,
located in southwestern British Columbia, Canada.
The more politically correct term for the Lillooet that is commonly
used, the Stl'atl'imx Nation, is technically incorrect. The term Stl'atl'imx
refers to the Lillooet communities in the vicinity of the Fraser River.
There are three other divisions of the Lillooet apart from the Stl'atl'imx:
The Tsal'alhmec are the Lillooet residing around Anderson and Seton Lakes;
the Lilwat'ul are the Lillooet of the Mount Currie and Pemberton area;
and the N'kuktsa inhabit the lower Lillooet River valley.
The In-SHUCK-ch are basically the N'kuktsa division, which is made up
of three communities: Douglas (Xa'xtsa),Skatin (Skookumchuck), and Samahquam.
Their traditional territory (see map) includes the upper Harrison Lake
and lower Lillooet River drainages, and their communities are situated
within the lower Lillooet River valley. There are currently a little
over a 850 members of the In-SHUCK-ch Nation.
